New Neighbors

Back in the early summer we found that we had a new neighbor.

Meet our little humming bird in her little nest!  One night we were sitting out on the patio and Heath noticed this nest.  It was the smallest nest I have ever seen.  It was about the size of a golf ball.  After further investigation, we saw she was a momma to be. 

The eggs were about the size of a jelly bean.  We did a little research and found the momma will incubate the eggs for about 2 weeks.  She lays 2 eggs and lays them on 2 different days. 

When the baby hummingbirds hatch they have no feathers.  Because of this, the momma spends most of her time on the nest.  As their feathers grow in the momma spends more and more time away searching for food.  When we saw that we had a nest with babies, we made sure to put out our feeder.  This way momma didn't have to go far.

A few days after these birds had left there were 2 more eggs in the nest.  Either another female had taken the nest over or our momma bird is a hussy!
